For patients experiencing restricted oral function, our Mississauga dentists can perform a frenectomy to help resolve conditions such as tongue tie, lip tie or cheek tie.
Request AppointmentWhat is a Frenectomy?
A frenectomy is a simple oral surgery to remove a frenum when it is restricting oral function. Frenums are small folds of tissue that act to connect areas within your mouth, such as your cheeks, tongue, or lips, to your gum area. A frenectomy can be performed if the frenum is causing restrictions with eating or speaking.
The Procedure
The frenum is very thin and has few nerves. Frenectomies are fast-healing, and require no anesthesia. Your dentist will simply cut the frenum, freeing the tongue, lip or cheek. This procedure typically lasts only 10 to 15 minutes.
Types of Frenums
Here at Southcommon Dental, our dentists regularly perform frenectomies in the following cases:
- Lingual Frenum (Tongue Tie)
Lingual frenum is the tissue that connects the tongue to the bottom of the mouth. When this frenum restricts movement in the mouth, it’s referred to as a tongue tie.
- Labial Frenum (Lip Tie)
Labial frenum is the tissue that connects the lips to the bottom of your upper and lower gums. When this frenum restricts movement in the mouth, it’s referred to as a lip tie.
- Buccal Frenum (Cheek Tie)
Buccal frenum is the tissue that connects the gums to the inside of the cheeks. When this frenum restricts movement in the mouth, it’s referred to as a cheek tie.
